Colonia Camalú, located 91 Miles south of Ensenada, (about two hours), has a population of over 8,000 inhabitants. In town or at the beach are hotels, (Pirate's Cove Hotel, Villa Margarita, and Hotel California) , resturants, medical services, internet access, and markets for basic supplies. The main exports of Camalu are from fishing and farming. Tourists can buy fresh fish and then have the fish cooked at the Cueva de Pirata restaurant, (which overlooks the ocean), the family owners Enrique and Elvira Cardenas, also own a fish factory that supplies fish to many restaurants up and down the coast.
Turn right at the traffic light on Mex 1 for the playa and Cueva de Pirata.
Lobster season starts in October and continues through March. And yes the Cardenas can cook Puerto Nuevo style lobster. Cueva de Pirata prices are reasonable an entire plate of food may only set one back 50 pesos or $5.00.

The Baja 500 will be passing through Camalu west of the highway. The 500 mile off road race starts in Ensenada and runs a course south past Camalu then cuts inland towards Mike''s Sky Ranch, east through Diablo Dry Lake, north and then west back to Ensenada.
The race is one of the world best know off road races; creating one of the events of the year for both people on the course and in the off road racing community.
The fishing is excellent. You can hire a local fishermen to go out fishing on their pangas. Many sports fishermen recommend Lee Moreno, who has GPS on his boats but does not have a website. Contact information would be available at Cueva de Pirata, Mr Moreno is well known with lots of experiance. Cueva de Pirata also rents boats.
The surf break is another attraction, which is rarely crowded, it has an exposed reef and point break with consistent surf that can work at any time of the year. The best wind direction is from the northeast. Tends to receive distant groundswells and the best swell direction is from the west. Water temperatures range from lows nearing 10°C(50°F) to highs approaching 21°C(70°F)., wetsuits are recommended.
Surfers can be found camping alone the beach. Electrical hookups are available from Cueva de Pirata.
Off Roading, there is a coastal road which is an attraction for off-roading and motorcycling alone the coast, which does get used for international off roading events. Specifically the 46th Tecate Score Baja 1000 will be racing Nov 13-17, with pre runs beginning October 24th. When not used for the race tourists can travel the same road.
